My tooth hurts but I'm afraid to go to the dentist!
Fear of going to the dentist is one of the most common phobias that people have. And while we would LOVE to debunk this fear, we know that some people just have a negative psychological reaction to the idea of going to the dentist.
This fear can stem from a lot of different sources. A bad childhood experience with a dentist, negative media images of dentists and the feeling of vulnerability and loss of control are just some of scenarios that contribute to this fear.
However, if you are having pain, don't let your fear get the best of you. Waiting to treat a tooth that is sensitive or painful can lead to a much larger, and more painful situation that might require extensive dental work. A sensitive or painful tooth that could be fixed with a small filling, if left untreated could turn into a root canal, crown or even an extraction.
So, how can you help me get over my fear of going to the dentist?
We want you to feel comfortable the minute you walk into our practice. We strive to provide you with a positive experience. Dr. Perella will listen to your concerns and talk with you about your options with a no pressure, gentle approach.
Yes, but what if I need to get a shot?
Novocaine was invented so that patients won't feel any pain during a procedure that would normally be very painful. Think childbirth.
We use a topical numbing agent on the area where the shot will be administered, so you won't even feel the little prick of the needle. Dr. Perella also takes his time. No rushing to get it done.
Ok, that makes me feel a little better. But I'm still a little nervous.
It's ok to feel nervous. But remember, there is nothing worse than a painful tooth. The best thing you can do for yourself is to come in for an exam. We'll take care of you from there.
